About:

The Spray family have been growers since just after the First World War when Joseph Spray started a market garden in Leamington Spa.

His son Bob studied at Writtle college and worked at Kew Gardens before joining the local authority at Southend and afterwards moving to Kirkcaldy to manage their parks department. In 1957 he then stared his own business in Bonnyrigg growing Tomatoes and cut flower Chrysanths and his wife Irene had florist shops throughout the Lothians.

Their son David and wife Hilda joined the company in the 60’s and it expanded to grow shrubs, bedding plants and a small retail shop. Bedding plants became the big thing in the early 80’s and they travelled all over the USA learning from the growers at the cutting edge of bedding plant plug production. They are now one of the largest producers in the UK.

Their daughter Carolyn now manages the garden centre and Richard their son runs Pentland Biomass which offers biomass boilers and wood fuel.

Vegan friendly plus gluten free options. Food and drinks are also available to take away.

One of my favourite places I take my humans and my furbrother Sparky to is the Café Panola at Pentland Plants Garden Centre, just outside Edinburgh. We often stop there for a bite to eat and a browse around the garden centre.



The café has its own dog friendly area and there is a pawsome selection of doggy treats to buy at the counter such as frozen yoghurt, popcorn and from the Barking Bakery iced woofins, pupcakes and doggie cookies.
There’s even doggie beer but thankfully no ID is required, BOL! There’s so much choice I never know what to order but today I had the iced woofins and cookies and I must say they were absolutely yummy.


Dad had fish and chips and a latte and mum tried the homebaking, tiffin and lemon cake and a soya milk latte. Mum said the cakes were delicious and many of them are vegan.

Afterwards, mum always insists on dragging us around the garden centre looking at plants and shrubs.
This is the boring bit but I suppose you’ve got to take the ‘ruff’ with the smooth, BOL!
