Private apartment at Walmer Castle opens to the public
The Queen Mother's Private Apartment at Walmer Castle Historic Opening

The private apartment of the Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports, which was once held by Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, will be open to the public for the first time at Walmer Castle in Kent.

A Royal Retreat
During her time as Lord Warden, The Queen Mother loved to visit Walmer Castle for her summer trips. She even brought her corgis along and had her own curtains put up for her stay. The castle's stunning gardens always had a vase of flowers ready to welcome her.

History of the Lord Warden
The Lord Warden position was created to control the five powerful ports of the southeast coast. Walmer Castle became the official residence for the Lord Warden in the 18th century. Today, it is a ceremonial role, most recently held by Admiral of the Fleet, Lord Michael Boyce.

Behind the Scenes Tour
Visitors will now have the chance to explore rooms in the private apartment, including the sitting room, dining room, and master bedroom. These rooms were used by The Queen Mother and other Lord Wardens and their families.

Rare Opportunity
Kathryn Bedford, English Heritage's Curator at Walmer Castle, describes this as a rare opportunity to see the private apartment. Visitors will see private items, family photos, and artwork that have not been displayed for decades.

Historical Significance:
The list of previous Lord Wardens includes influential figures like Sir Winston Churchill, William Pitt the Younger, and the Duke of Wellington. The Queen Mother was the only woman to hold the office and the longest-serving Lord Warden.

Opening times:
The Lord Warden's Apartment will open on Saturday, March 23, and will remain open throughout 2024.

Dogs:
With the exception of assistance dogs, dogs are not permitted into the grounds and gardens of Walmer Castle.
