Compulsory microchipping of cats in England.

It became compulsory for all dogs 8 weeks old and over to be microchipped on the 6th of April 2016.

I previously reported in April 2022 that the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) were seeking your views on potential changes to microchipping legislation. The consultation was opened on the 22nd of March 2022 and closed on the 17th May 2022.

The data from that consultation has been gathered and assessed. In March after discussion ib Parliament is was agreed that all pet cats in England must be microchipped.

What is microchipping?
This means that a tiny chip will be put under their skin that has a unique code which will be used to help identify any cat (or dog) if they get lost or stolen.

Why is this happening?
There are over 9 million pet cats in England, but many of them don't have microchips. This makes it really hard to find them if they go missing. The government asked people for their opinions on this new rule, and almost everyone said they supported it.

What does this mean for cat owners?
If you have a cat, you will need to make sure they get microchipped before they turn 20 weeks old. This chip will have your contact information stored in a database so you can be easily reunited with your cat if they ever get lost.

What do the experts say?
The Environment Secretary and the Chief Veterinary Officer both think this new rule is a good idea. They say that microchipping is the best way to make sure lost pets find their way back home.

What happens if you don’t get your cat microchipped?
If your cat isn't microchipped by June 10, 2024, you could face a fine of up to £500.
