Interview with... Emily Tull

Tell me about yourself.
My name is Emily, I am based in a seaside town in Kent and you can often find me down on the beach.

What is your Business? How old is it?
I am a freelance artist, creating original hand embroidery wildlife and portrait artworks and commissions. I have been doing this for 25 years.

Did you have to do training? How long does it take?
I did a degree in Fine Art where I specialised in painting, although over those three years I did experiment with photography too.

Why did you want to do this profession?
As a child it was the only subject I had an interest in and was the natural route for me to follow.

What is your most bizarre moment?
In 2018 I had a solo exhibition at the huge Knitting and Stitching show at Alexandra Palace and the whole experience was quite overwhelming with the large numbers of visitors. I found it bizarre that so many people knew of my artwork and wanted photos of me, I was very out of my comfort zone.

Name one unusual fact about your profession.
The Olympics (1912 - 1948) awarded medals for artistic works

What one piece of advice would you give to someone wanting to enter that profession?
Make sure you have an online portfolio whether that be on social media or a professional website and keep it up to date.

Are you owned by any animals?
The birds on the garden feeders are pretty demanding.

Where is your favourite place to be?
Somewhere in nature, it could be the beach, woods or the local nature reserve.

What sort of music do you like?
I listen to a wide range of music from classical to pop to rock and dance, it all depends on my mood.

What is your greatest accomplishment?
I have be very fortunate to have won prizes for my work, most recently winning the Mavis Hall prize for my Corn Crake artwork at the Disappearing Worlds exhibition at the Wytchwood Gallery, Malton, Yorkshire.

What is your next goal in life?
It would be gain more collectors of my art and have galleries represent my work.

How can everyone get in touch with you?
I can be contacted through my website www.emilytull.co.uk

Finally and most importantly... What was your most embarrassing moment?
I was invited to create work live at an event, on my arrival I started unpacking my kit and realised that I had left my needle at home! Eeek! Luckily Someone was able to source one for me so I could stitch.
