Tell Tales Books
- Interview

Tell me about yourself
I’m Les, I’m sixty. I have three grown up children & four grandsons. I worked in a primary school as a teaching assistant for twenty years.
When our mum died, my sister and I had to sell the family home and this gave us both a little pot of money with which I started Tell Tales. I was hurtling toward fifty five & questioned myself over and over about the wisdom of starting a new business with no experience. I decided I had around ten years until retirement & wanted to spend those years in the world of selling children’s books and I was going to give it a go!
Reading has been my saviour in lots of ways. As a child, books were where my friends lived & how I had adventures when my extremely busy parents were building up their business.

Books continue to be my refuge, my travel, my mysteries, my window into other lives that aren’t like mine & my peep into lifestyles I’ll never live. They are where I learn about new places, new points of view & how I challenge myself on how I live my life.

I am so happy to be part of a new generation’s reading journey!

Tell me about your Business.
Tell Tales is the smallest bookshop you’ll ever see. More bookshelf than bookshop! I stock Children’s books & because the space is so limited I consider every inch of shelf space and fill it with the best of books. There’s only me, so I do everything from the ordering to the accounting to the mopping of the floors!

Lots of sleepless nights, stress, worries, no wages, not much time off…but when the shop is full to the point of not a seat to be had - & bookish chat is filling the air - I’m never happier!

How old is your business?
I started the business in January 2019.

What would you say the best part of owning your book shop?
The best part of owning my business is the new & wonderful friends I’ve made along the way.

Are dogs allowed in your book shop?
I love to have dogs visit Tell Tales with well behaved owners!

Are you owned by any animals ?
I am not owned by any animals. However, the assistance dog who lives next door makes sure I stay under supervision! Betsy calls in for treats every day
