Training Cilla
- February 2025

Cilla is a 6 month old rescue pup, she's anxious in an urban environment so as a family we're learning from a professional trainer. Tips are tailored for Cilla, and the family, but may be of help or worth a try. Obviously they are the opinion of the professional and not me! Elaine.
1. This month was all about engagement, basically getting it and keeping it with Cilla. Being 6 months she has the attention span of a gnat and needs to engage with me before training. So on a walk when she looks up at me I am to praise her, when she looks to me in the park she gets a treat. I can then call her for treats when she's on a long line. Without regular engagement, recall will be harder.... apparently.
2. Stand in-between worrying items for Cilla and Cilla when on a lead or line. For instance, a park worker in high vis, Cilla spots them a mile off and I am to quietly move so that I am in-between them, however how distant. Therefore calmly being her advocate and no more scary wheelbarrows!
Working from last month: firstly the less chatting from me is definitely helping as Cilla is clearly not so overloaded. The long line is great for doggy interaction and the looser lead in general. However I still have to rein her in for safety sometimes!
