About:
This elegant early 18th-century villa was designed by the 3rd Earl of Burlington as an exquisite setting to showcase his art collections and entertain his friends. Inspired by his travels in Italy and study of architecture, it is one of the earliest and finest examples of the ‘neo-Palladian’ style in England. The style greatly influenced British country house design throughout the 18th century, while the surrounding spacious garden created at the same time can claim to be the birthplace of the English landscape garden.

After Burlington’s death the Dukes of Devonshire inherited the Chiswick estate, and from the 1860s the house was rented out, at one stage becoming an asylum for people with mental illnesses. The house and gardens are now managed by the Chiswick House and Gardens Trust.

The 19th-century menagerie at Chiswick House in west London was part of a wider tradition of keeping exotic creatures on aristocratic estates.

Dog Friendly:
Dog walkers are welcome to enjoy the gardens and exercise their dogs freely, however should observe the 'Dogs on Short Leads' and 'No Dogs' areas at all times. Dogs are not allowed in the house, although assistance dogs are welcome across the site.

The public car park is situated just off the westbound A4 (around 5 minutes' walk away from the house) and clearly marked by a brown tourist board entrance sign. It has space for 60 cars, including three spaces for Blue Badge holders, and is operated by Hounslow Council. Parking is also available on residential roads around the park and pedestrian access is via gates on Burlington Lane, Staveley Road and Park Road.
