Summer’s arrived, and with it, lots of reasons to celebrate all things wonderful Wag!
More home placements than ever before; 327 people supported with our special befrienders last year (amazing!), and new referrals are arriving all the time. All stories of a need for friends that breaks your heart to hear, but which bring everyone enormous pleasure to be able to help.
We’re visiting many care homes, hospitals and hospices right across the region — 212 today — which is not only a great blessing for their dog-loving residents and patients but also for our volunteers who love visiting their many friends and making a difference to people at the hardest times in their lives.
It’s not all plain sailing, though! 206 care and medical establishments are waiting for their own Visiting Wag Teams — from Northallerton up to Berwick-upon-Tweed and across to Brampton. Fortunately, only ten isolated people in their own homes though, thanks to the tireless efforts of our office team, who make sure everyone has their own friend within an average of six weeks. No mean feat!
So, recruitment is the big summer challenge for Wag! A big shout out to The Works for helping us with our recruitment campaign — 74 newbies since 21 January! Wow! But they’re mostly replacing the great volunteers who’ve left for a million reasons — mainly because their gorgeous dogs retire or start to have health issues! So, for everyone with a lovely dog or who knows someone with a lovely dog, please join us now; visiting older dog lovers who miss their own loved ones will be the best use of a couple of hours in your week, we guarantee it!
‘WALK FOR WAG’ 2025 IS ON SATURDAY, 13TH SEPTEMBER!
We moved our walk to the beautiful Derwent Reservoir & Waterside in 2024 and it was wonderful!
As well as raising important funds, it's a chance for everyone to get together, older friends too, walk 8km or 3km - with or without a dog - along the stunning Derwent Reservoir, knowing that every sponsored step you take provides Wag friends for elderly dog lovers in our communities!
