About:
Once the biggest colliery spoil heap in Europe this park is an excellent example of restored industrial land. The main feature of the site is a sixteen hectare lake which is surrounded by open grassland and woodland.
The diverse habitats established over the years have led to a variety of birds, plants and animals becoming resident in the park, a number of which are protected species. In addition the lake provides an ideal site for both resident and migratory birds.
The lake is a popular venue for sail boarding, canoeing and coarse fishing.
Disabled groups can use the launching ramps located at the north and south ends of the lake. Further details are available from the Countryside Officer.
Cut grass paths allow good access around the lake and there are many areas ideal for picnicking. Suitable footwear should be worn in wet weather. The cycleway which runs through the park connects with the Castles and Coastline cycle route currently being developed in south east Northumberland.
The old colliery within the park is now a museum and an enjoyable family day out could include a visit to this attraction.

Opening Hours:
The Site can be accessed anytime.

Entry Charge:
There is no entry charge or parking charge currently in operation.

Parking:
There is plenty of parking here.
The carpark is loose gravel with a few potholes here and there, so drive carefully.

Dog Friendly:
Dogs can be off lead or on lead, but under control at all times as there are birds, wildlife and in close proximity to fast flowing traffic.

Facilities:
There is a building with facilities, but I have never used it, so not sure what is available.

Notes:
This is quite a large site and you can spend time wandering around the lake.
There are fishing platforms around the lake, so be aware you don't disturb anyone fishing as you explore.
Bins are spread throughout the site.
There are plenty of benches dotted around the site, enabling your human to rest if needed.
There is a choice of sturdy path to walk on or wander around on the grass. Both options take you around the lake, but the grass option is a bit uneven at times.
At the carpark there are a few picnic tables dotted around.

Contact:
Lake fees are payable on a daily, weekly or yearly basis and we welcome bookings from educational and other interested parties – Telephone (01670) 843444.
