Coronation gardens for food and nature
On the 24th of June 2023 a new initiative was launched that which pays tribute to His Majesty, King Charles III’s long-standing commitment to the natural world and the environment.

It is called the Coronation Gardens for Food and Nature.

There are an estimated 24 million gardens in the UK, which make up nearly 30% of the total urban area and create a mosaic of oases for nature in towns and cities. Add to that all the millions of balcony and window ledge plant pots.

So what we choose to grow and how we care for these spaces, however small, can make a big difference for us and wildlife.

Feed yourself and your wild neighbours. It doesn't have to take a lot of space to grow your own food, from herbs to salads, fruits and vegetables.

Home grown food can be easier on our wallets and the climate. As nature gives these gifts to us, we can help give back to nature by creating habitats for wildlife too!
The programme is being run in partnership with:
The Wildlife Trust, who  work to inspire people to create a wilder future – from advising thousands of landowners on how to manage their land to benefit wildlife, to connecting hundreds of thousands of school children with nature every year.

Incredible Edible with a mission is to create kind, confident and connected communities, with raised awareness of the ways we can live more sustainably, through the power of food.

Garden Organic promotes organic growing and composting in a garden, allotment or pot on a window ledge.

The NFWI (National Federation of Women’s Institutes). That enables women to develop new skills, giving them opportunities to campaign on issues that matter to them and their communities.

Coronation Gardens for Food and Nature is a three-year programme that will encourage people to grow their own food in wildlife-friendly gardens by providing advice and an opportunity to pledge their garden on a map.

The tive will be kick started by a grant of £247,834 from The National Lottery Heritage Fund will help start the initiative.

The Coronation Gardens for Food and Nature are encouraging people to:
Grow healthy food to eat
Plant pollinator-friendly blooms
Create a water feature
Leave a patch of long grass or pile of logs
Go chemical and peat-free

Ideas, inspiration and help for communities and individuals to get started, plus the pledge that people can make by registering their garden on a map, can be found at:
