Lucy and Nelson - On the Move
August 2026
Hola Amigos/woof hello Buddies
We are Lucy and Nelson from #ERSRemovals back again and checking in with all our Furry Amigos, for a bonus interview
Warning fellow doggos and other Furry amigos and amigas this might get a bit technical
Anyway Hello hooman Ashley
Ashley: so wait you two, I have to be interviewed and type this up to for you? seems fair, what it you dogs say? Bol!
Nelson: so come the first July some new rules come into effect for vans tell us more and no getting too technical and too Transport manager, keep it so Lucy can understand
Lucy: hey!
Ashley: Okay well the EU has introduced new rules for vans that are over 2500kg MAM (that is max authorised mass ) that went/go Live the 1st July
Lucy: are these new rules ?
Ashley: yes and no
Nelson: what does that mean?
Ashley: Well Nelson, the Rules are new for vans so yes, but not new rules as the rules are the same ones that Lorry already have, now I could go real technical here Nelson
Lucy: a Little technical only please woof
Ashley: Okay. Well the Van will come under the driver time regulations, is that simple enough for you two ?
Both: yes but what does that mean a little more technical please.
Ashley: Okay well still keeping it simple, vans doing European work (and lorries in scope that’s a more complex answer so will not go into, as there are rules that make some lorries out of scope and you have 4 types of drivers hours regulations , Northern Irish, UK Drivers hours, both UK ones, then 561 which is the EU one and then AETR which is the UN one but is the same as 561 as it was mirrored, but now we risk getting too technical)
Nelson: okay woof dumb it back down we are dogs not Transport managers, which one of them rules for this matter?
Ashley: The 561 well and 163 but all that matters about 163 is that it is the regulations for the recording of drivers hours and sets how often the tacho graph needs down loading max 28 days for drivers records and 90 max for the vehicle (and also that all in scope vehicles must have a gen 2 smart tacho)
Lucy: okay so why does it matter beyond it been the law to the customers?
Nelson: yes as in how the woof will it effect them?
Ashley: Well it matters because it is the law , is the short answer, how it effects the customers, well per the rules covering vans they could and yes it could be dangerous. No our vans never did, but a van could drive non stop.
Now they will need to take breaks, (yes I could explain this in more details that is a very quick answer version) and they will have a max amount of Driving hours a day, 9 hours normally (yes smarty collar Nelson they are allowed a to drive 2 times a week 10 hours (and before Lucy say what in one go, nope with the required breaks)
And they also must now have a min rest period of 11 hours between shifts. Yes there are rules that allow it to be reduced Nelson
Nelson: woof you would think I know these rules nearly as well as you , well I was on walks while you where revising 4 years ago and you where a verbal out loud reviser
Ashley: And yes there are more rules within all this that I could go into, but Nelson and Lucy said to keep it simple and that’s tricky.
But a driver can only drive a max of 56 hours in a week, but the 2 week period must average 90 hours at the most and that moves. So week 1 and 2 no more than 90, then week 2 and 3 no more than 90 hours so on and so on.
I will not go into things like pay back, no Nelson and Lucy that is not paying you back in doggy treats so stop drooling.
The point is as complex as the rules sound, all that matters to the customer, your international relocation using a van (when hired a mover) will take longer, as the van will not be able to drive as many hour in a day.
