Strawberries

Animal Safety: Dogs: Yes Cats: Yes Rabbits: Yes
Free Grazing: Yes

Lifespan:
Strawberry plants operate as hardy perennials.
They easily live and produce sweet fruit for five to six years total, though their commercial yield and overall crop productivity typically peak during the second and third seasons.

Sow, Flower, Harvest Months:
In temperate northern climates, bare-root runners are sown outdoors during March or April.
Five-petaled white flowers bloom from May to June, directly leading into a wonderful, vibrant harvest season spanning late June through July.

Soil Type:
These shallow rooted fruits thrive in fertile, well draining sandy loam. They prefer an acidic to neutral soil pH level ranging between 5.5 and 6.5, requiring consistent moisture without ever becoming waterlogged.

Size:
Individual mature plants grow roughly 6 to 12 inches tall and spread 12 to 18 inches wide. The sweet, juicy berries vary by specific cultivar, usually measuring 1 to 2 inches long across.

About:
As popular members of the rose family, strawberries are entirely unique because their tiny yellow seeds grow on the exterior skin. They are low-growing, perennial herbaceous plants that multiply rapidly by sending out long, creeping stems called runners.

Strawberries are delicious, vibrant red fruits prized worldwide for their sweet flavor, fragrant aroma, and exceptionally rich vitamin C nutrient content.

History:
The modern garden strawberry was created in France during the 1740s by crossing two distinct species native to the Americas: Fragaria chiloensis and Fragaria virginiana. Cultivated globally today, smaller wild varieties were previously gathered by ancient Romans for culinary enjoyment and medicinal uses.
