On the 19th of November 2021 The Animal Welfare (Sentience) Bill was amended to include decapods crustaceans and cephalopod molluscs as sentient beings.

Decapod crustaceans are 10 legged creatures, such as crabs, lobsters, crayfish etc.

Cephalopod molluscs are creatures with a prominent head and several arms or tentacles modified from a primitive foot, such as octopus, squid and cuttlefish etc.

Although these creatures have now been added to the Bill, it is not expected to affect or have a direct impact on the shellfish catching or the restaurant industry.
It is intended that recognising decapods and cephalopods can feel pain and it is only right that they are included in the Animal Welfare (Sentience) Bill.

This will mean that if and when the Animal Welfare (Sentience) Bill becomes law, experts in the field of decapods and cephalopods will be part of the Animal Sentience Committee and any new laws or government decision making would ensure the welfare of decapods and cephalopods was taken into account
