Alyssa

Tell me a little bit about yourself.
My name is Alyssa Bunny. I am a house rabbit from western Massachusetts, USA.

I was rescued, but not in the traditional way, that is to say, from a shelter. Let me explain. A family purchased me from a pet store and brought me home. After a short time, it was discovered that the young girl human was allergic to me. This is where it gets scary. Instead of bringing me back to the store or even to a shelter, the Mom told the girl's brothers to take me and leave me in the woods. Being a friendly, bright white bunny and with the coyotes, hawks and dogs around (and sometimes even bears), I wouldn't have lasted a day. Luckily the boys, even as young as they were, knew this and began canvassing the neighborhood, going door to door asking each person whether they could take me in. I didn't mention that it was pouring rain at the time, but it was. As they were just about to give up, they reached my furever home's door, a third floor apartment. This is how determined they were to save me. That determination melted my new human Mom & Dad's hearts when they opened the door and listened to the boys' heartfelt story, how many doors they had knocked on and been turned away from. How they couldn't bring themselves to leave me in the woods, but were afraid they would have to. How could my new humans say no? They couldn't. I am that cute.

Since that day, my humans have learned a lot about indoor bunnies (we can be litter box trained!) and I have learned a lot about humans. I can't imagine being anywhere else than with them and I'm pretty sure they feel the same way about me.

How many humans/siblings do you have and long have you had them?
I live with four humans: my Mom, my Dad, my brother and his son, my nephew. I have a large extended human family, too. I have three animal siblings: my sister, Babe the Cockatiel, my brother, Pete and my sister, Little T, both painted turtles. When I first came to live with my family on September 13, 2014, I also had a sister cat named Lily, who was my special buddy until she went OTRB December 28, 2015.

Do you work? If so where/what do you do?
I do not work, unless you count the bunstruction projects I have currently underway where I mold cardboard boxes to my liking with my sharp teeth.

If you could choose your name what would it be?
Good question. As the boys that couldn't keep me were leaving that day, my Mom asked their allergic sister's name, it was Alyssa. That's where I got my name. My human Dad has an ancestor named Letitia. That's a cool name: Letitia Lapin.

What is your favourite food?
Bananas!

Where is your favourite place to be?
I have several spots around the apartment that I frequent throughout the day, but for some reason I really enjoy laying next to the little rocking chair in the corner of the living room that the stuffed rabbit named Donna sits on.

What is your favourite way to entertain yourself (annoy your humans)?
Every so often I like to try to dig through the couch from the bottom up. It's funny when Mom and Dad start patting the cushions and saying no over and over again until I stop. Would love to have that on video.

What is your greatest accomplishment?
One time I stuck my whole head and upper body through my sister Babe the Cockatiel's birdcage door.

What is your next goal in life?
I would like to conquer my fear of non-carpeted floors.

If you could be/do anything for a day, what would it be?
If I could do anything for a day, I would find homes for as many shelter animals that I could.

Finally and most importantly...What was your human’s most embarrassing moment?
One time my Dad decided to wear a new pair of jeans without washing them first. He and my Mom went grocery shopping and as they were in the checkout line, the female clerk asked him with a smile, "New pants?" Thinking he was looking pretty good (this was years ago) and that she was flirting with him, he answered "Why, yes they are." Then the clerk turned to Mom and thoroughly deflated Dad by explaining, "The price tag's still on them." That was pretty embarrassing.
