Tell me a little bit about your company.
Northern Virginia's Premier dog day care and boarding kennel, Healthy Hound Playground, was born out the simple idea that dog daycare and boarding in Reston VA could be done better. We wanted to build a facility that we would feel comfortable leaving our own dogs at. It was our belief that dogs are entitled to some core services while they are in our care, whether socializing in daycare or boarding overnight with us.
At Healthy Hound Playground we provide a continuous 12 hours of daily cage free doggie day care in our expansive facility for dogs to enjoy running and playing or just hanging out with their fellow canines, along with a few other key services that are currently not found all together in other facilities in our area.
Outdoor potty breaks are provided to all of our daycare and boarding guests throughout the day at no extra cost. This is very unique to doggy daycares but hugely important. Dogs adapt quickly to their environment and if they realize that they won't be able to go outdoors to relieve themselves routinely, many begin to withhold water from themselves. This can lead to mild dehydration, a change in their overall mood, and decreased comfort and enjoyment.
Healthy Hound Playground also has 24/7 on site staff in order to monitor the safety and health of all its guests, even when they have moved from daycare to their private sleeping quarters for the night. We allow owners to pack their dog’s favorite bed, blanket, toys and treats. For dogs that don't bring their own comforts from home, we provide them elevated canine cots for extra comfort and lower stress.
Lastly, Healthy Hound Playground employs an Animal Behaviorist that is responsible for staff training and overall dog safety. This helps to ensure that our guests are able to run, play, and socialize in a safe and structured environment.
What animals do you cater for?
At Healthy Hound Playground we cater exclusively to animals of the canine persuasion (dogs!).
What facilities are available for animals?
During a typical day of daycare, all of our dogs spend their time 100% cage-free in one of our three expansive daycare rooms, totally about 3,800 square feet. These rooms have cushioned rubber matting to minimize joint fatigue and provide sure footing to alleviate joint trauma that can occur if a dog slips and falls on a slippery concrete surface.
For the evening, we offer our guests large individual canine cottages complete with even thicker cushioned rubber matting and elevated canine cots to sleep away their day of play. We encourage our boarders to bring their own beds, blankets, toys and treats with them as well to ensure they get the maximum level of comfort while away from home, and minimize any anxiety as much as possible. We currently have about 55 canine cottages, all 4 feet by 6 feet and larger. For pups that feel more comfortable in smaller quarters, we have an additional 30 large semi-permanent crates.
In August of 2016 Healthy Hound Playground will be expanding the facility to include an additional 1,600 square feet of daycare space and 25 additional large canine cottages due to the acquisition of an adjoining suite.
While most dogs that visit us are able to enjoy group play, occasionally we have pups visit that are unable to attend these sessions, or pups that simply need a little something extra to burn off their energy. For these dogs we offer a walk or run on our doggy treadmill customized to each individual dog's strength and stamina.
In what way does your company benefit animals?
Healthy Hound Playground benefits the dogs that come to stay with us by giving them the ultimate day care and boarding experience by offering necessary creature comforts like outdoor potty breaks, large daycare rooms to encourage their socialization and physical health, spacious and comfortable canine cottages, and ensuring their safety by always having experienced attendants supervise the rooms and stay overnight.
Additionally, when we conceived the idea of opening Healthy Hound Playground, the goal was always to give back to the dogs in our community by providing our facility to those in need of a place to stay until they find their forever home. Over the past few years we have provided foster care to over 2 dozen dogs that otherwise would have remained in area shelters with an uncertain future. We work with a great organization Beagle Rescue of Southern Maryland to accomplish this. More than half of these dogs have been adopted directly by our own customers. As an added incentive to place these dogs in the best forever homes, Healthy Hound Playground typically offers free daycare and boarding for these dogs forever! Healthy Hound Playground also provides in-kind and monetary donations to local area rescues.

Finally and most importantly...What was your most embarrassing moment?
My most embarrassing moment at Healthy Hound Playground was when I was taking a family on a tour of our facility, and as I showed them the canine cottages (kennels), one of the adults asked, “So when do you put the children in here?” – they thought they were touring a human day care! That was a difficult one to explain…However, I was pleased that our facility was pleasant enough to pass for a kids’ day care until we reached the kennels!
